A Short Break Around Australia With the Best Bits

At stop in Sydney to climb the Harbour Bridge's inner arch for some spectacular views of the harbour; otherwise, you could cruise past the iconic, gleaming white sails of the Sydney Opera House, one of the most distinctive and recognisable buildings in the world, is probably the perfect way to start a tour of Australia before heading for some people-watching as you stroll along the sun-kissed golden sands of Bondi Beach and perhaps a dip in the surf.

For wine lovers there's the Hunter Valley, where you can tour the wineries, dine on gourmet cuisine and sample some of Australia's finest wines, a crisp semillon or ripe shiraz.  Then there's the Scenic Skyway tram in the stunning Blue Mountains.  A listed World Heritage site, you can glide between clifftops over the lush rainforest and valleys before stopping at a charming mountain town.

While in Queensland nature lovers can take in the other World Heritage sites: The Great Barrier Reef, where you can explore in a glass bottom boat or by diving or snorkelling.  Check out sunny Cairns where you can swim in the lagoon, take the the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway to Kuranda and check out the gorges and waterfalls of Barron Gorge National Park. Then, visit the world's oldest rainforest, the 135 million-year old Daintree Rainforest, with its spectacular gorges and waterfalls, where you can hike, drive or even zipline through the trees.

And what about that other iconic must-see, the isolated sacred Aboriginal site of Uluru (which some of you might know as Ayers Rock)?  This vast sandstone formation, looming more than 1000ft high, seemingly changes colour from dusty pink to fiery red and then mauve as the sun sets, it is a truly memorable sight.

The Great Ocean Road, this stunning coastal road trip from Melbourne, with its boutiques, bars and cafes, to elegant adelaide allows you to Marval at the iconic Twelve Apostels - dramatic limestone rock stacks that jut out of the Ocean.  A drive along this sweeping coastline punctuated by lighthouses, surft spots, glorious beaches and pretty fishing ports. You can stop to enjoy a Yarra Valley wine experience, dine on fresh seafood and venture into the lush rainforest of the Great Otway National Park, with waterfalls.
