The Boryeong mud festival was started in 1998 for the sole purpose of advertising the health benefit of Boryeong’s mud. Fast forward to today and it has grown into one of the biggest festival on the summer festival calendar – in Asia. For one weekend in July the Daecheon Beach comes alive with revilers from all over the world to take part in this muddy but healthy festival.
I was surprise when I learnt about it; I thought Korea! no way but it is true. You can take a plane from where ever you are and fly to Korea to douse your body in healthy mud for the whole weekend, and have fun while doing it. The mud for the festival is harvested from around the plain on the Daecheon beach and processed and made available in different forms. According to the festival organisers the mud is good for the human body and also has higher germanium, mineral and bentonte when compared to other products.
The festival is organise around different activities to get each participants as muddy as possible. You can take part in mud wrestling, mud sliding on the 44m long slide, swimming in the mud mega tub and joining in the mud photography contest and mud body painting. There are sports with a muddy twist available as well; mud Ssireum (Korean wrestling), softball and mud soccer are just some of the activities available.
If you feel it is not your style to wallow like the others then there are small pampering boutiques around the festival area with qualified professionals that can apply it for you.
