Take A Golfing Break in South Africa

South Africa’s Limpopo provence is well known for the Extreme 19th at Legend - it is one of the world's most difficult golfing holes.  To tee off for the 19th you are taken up in an helicopter to the longest par three in the world (361m), 1,400ft up on top of Hangclip Mountain, the helicopter is the only way of getting there. Should you make a hole in one, you get a cheque for $1 million. It is extreme but it’s worth a try.

If that doen’t take your fancy then there are many other golf courses in South Africa to chose from, whether its the traditional or theme-park. A week’s break is all you will need to leave with that memorable experience to match other places in the world.

The Legend Golf and Safari Resort, set in a game reserve two hours’ drive from Johannesburg airport, has two courses: the nine hole-hole Tribute, which aims to re-create the world’s most famous par threes, including the 12th at Augusta and the 18-hole Signature course. If you are staying in Cape Town, then a stay at the Cape Grace on the V&A Waterfront offers access to the a golf estate of your choice and can include whisky tasting. Cape Grace is only a 20-minute taxi ride from Royal Cape, South Africa’s oldest golf club and Rondebosch Golf Club.

Further south is Steenberg, not only one of South Africa’s most prestigious wineries, think award winning sauvignon blancs and Semillon, but complete with a golf course and hotel.  Steenberg is the Constantia Valley’s oldest farm, dating back to 1682, and has a five-star hotel with 21 rooms and a spa.

Head towards Stellenbosch, another win area and you will find the De Zalze Wineland Golf Estate.  De Zalze is the first golf course in the world to be Fair Trade certified. The estate has the 155-room Spier four-star hotel.

Near the Western Cape’s whale-watching coast is Starwood’s Arabella Western Cape Hotel and Spa, which as a 7,000-yard golf course.

Further east is the Garden Route, with the five-star Fancourt Hotel and Golf Estate. The estate has three courses, a 145-bedroom hotel, spa, gym and the 140-year-old Manor House (with 18 suites). Also in the Garden Route, near George is the Oubaai Golf Club, part of the Hyatt Regency Golf Resort and Spa.
